Cantonese: Defined
We use Cantonese here to refer to one of the most popular Chinese dialects used in the Guangdong Province and around (Hong Kong, Macau, and Guangxi Province). In Chinese, we call it 粵語, 廣府話, 廣州話, 廣東話。 Guangzhou used to be called Canton so Cantonese was meant to refer to the language spoken in that area or the people who live in Canton.
It must not be taken as Canto, which is a principal form of division in a long poem, especially the epic. The word comes from Italian, meaning “song” or singing.
We at ChineseBay are trying to provide our visitors with good lessons or tutorials for Cantonese learners online.
