1)Let’s continue to compare Cantonese and Mandarin pronunciation
\n B)There are some Cantonese sounds that do not exist in Mandarin.
\ne.g. Sounds with the ending ‘m’: saam1 \u4e09<\/a>(three)\/\u886b<\/a>(clothes) caam3 \u6749<\/a>(fir) sim4\u7985\uff08<\/a>Zen)
\n In Mandarin, they are pronounced as: san1\u4e09<\/a> shan1\u886b<\/a>(clothes)\/\u6749<\/a>(fir) chan2\u7985<\/a>(Zen)
\nFrom the above, you know that the different characters with the same pronunciation with the same tone in Cantonese may pronounced very different in Mandarin and vice versa. This causes mistakes for Cantonese and Mandarin-speakers trying to speak the other language.<\/p>\n

By mistake, Mandarin-speakers may say saan1 ger3 instead of saam1 go3 for \u4e09\u4e2a\uff08<\/a>three items)
\nand Cantonese-speakers may say cen4san1 instead of chen4shan1 for \u886c\u886b<\/a> (shirt).
\nIn many of the cases, these Northern and Southern accents can be understood.
\nSometimes, it causes lots of misunderstanding or discomfort for the listeners.
\nNote that we do not have zh\u3001<\/a>ch\u3001<\/a>sh\u3001<\/a>r\u3001<\/a>x in Cantonese while
\nin Mandarin there are no ending m (aam, am) p, t, k or initials m and ng or the following finals (added initial g, s, f to make examples):
\ngoe\u92f8<\/a> soeng\u5546<\/a> soek\u524a<\/a> seoi\u9700<\/a> seon\u8a62<\/a> seot\u6454<\/a> syu\u66f8<\/a> syun\u5b6b<\/a> syut\u96ea<\/a>, fui \u7070<\/a>(no. It is not the same as ‘ui’ in Pinyin for Mandarin) <\/p>\n

Some may want to say the Cantonese Jyutping ‘s’ is the same as ‘x’ in Pinyin. No, there is a little difference.
\ne.g. The Cantonese syun1\u5b6b<\/a>(grandson) is not the same as xun1\u718f<\/a>(smoked) in Mandarin
\nThe Cantonese si1gwaa1\u4e1d\u74dc<\/a>(Luffa) is not the same as xi1gua1\u897f\u74dc<\/a>(water melon) in Mandarin<\/p>\n

Maybe the subtle difference is hardly noticed for beginners.
