History shows that if you were in the minority, if no one believed you, it didn\u2019t mean you were wrong. Rather, it meant society was slow to catch up to you. And if those in the minority did not buckle, did not give up their truths, the world would shift below their feet.\u201d\u201cIf ever I was distraught or heartbroken, my mom would always say, Go read history. Her solution for everything. For so long I believed history was a thick book you carried around in your backpack, not something you could create. It was one hour in an air-conditioned portable classroom after lunch, watching Civil War reenactments. Our teacher making us eat expired crackers called hardtack so we could empathize with a soldier\u2019s diet in World War II. It\u2019d take me a long time to realize history is happening now, and we are a part of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Chanel\u5bf9\u53d7\u6027\u4fb5\u7684\u53d7\u5bb3\u4eba\u5f88\u5c11\u62a5\u8b66\u7684\u89e3\u91ca\uff1a\u201cWhen society questions a victim\u2019s reluctance to report, I will be here to remind you that you ask us to sacrifice our sanity to fight outdated structures that were designed to keep us down. Victims do not have the time for this. Victims are also students, teachers, parents, who can\u2019t give up work or education. The average adult can barely find time to renew their license at the DMV. It is not reasonable to casually demand that victims put aside their lives to spend more time pursuing something they never asked for in the first place. This is not about the victims\u2019 lack of effort. This is about society\u2019s failure to have systems in place in which victims feel there\u2019s a probable chance of achieving safety, justice, and restoration rather than being retraumatized, publicly shamed, psychologically tormented, and verbally mauled. The real question we need to be asking is not, Why didn\u2019t she report, the question is, Why would you?\u201d\u201cWhen a victim does go for help, she is seen as attacking the assailant. These are separate; seeking aid is her primary motive, his fallout is a secondary effect. But we are taught, if you speak, something bad happens to him. You will be blamed for every job he doesn\u2019t get, every game he doesn\u2019t play. His family, friends, community, team, will unleash hell on you, are you sure you want that? We force her to think hard about what this will mean for his life, even though he never considered what his actions would do to her. Inherently the victim is outnumbered. She is the sole object of his sexual aggression, expected to single-handedly undo all of their staunch beliefs, backed by years of amiable stories. And if those in the minority did not buckle, did not give up their truths, the world would shift below their feet.\u201d\u201cIf ever I was distraught or heartbroken, my mom would always say, Go read history. Her solution for everything. For so long I believed history was a thick book you carried around in your backpack, not something you could create. It was one hour in an air-conditioned portable classroom after lunch, watching Civil War reenactments. Our teacher making us eat expired crackers called hardtack so we could empathize with a soldier\u2019s diet in World War II. This is about society\u2019s failure to have systems in place in which victims feel there\u2019s a probable chance of achieving safety, justice, and restoration rather than being retraumatized, publicly shamed, psychologically tormented, and verbally mauled. The real question we need to be asking is not, Why didn\u2019t she report, the question is, Why would you?\u201d\u201cWhen a victim does go for help, she is seen as attacking the assailant. These are separate; seeking aid is her primary motive, his fallout is a secondary effect. But we are taught, if you speak, something bad happens to him. You will be blamed for every job he doesn\u2019t get, every game he doesn\u2019t play. His family, friends, community, team, will unleash hell on you, are you sure you want that? We force her to think hard about what this will mean for his life, even though he never considered what his actions would do to her. Inherently the victim is outnumbered. She is the sole object of his sexual aggression, expected to single-handedly undo all of their staunch beliefs, backed by years of amiable stories.
