Pinyin is the official pronunciation of Mandarin Chinese or Putonghua (which is pinyin itself, meaning common speech). Although we should never use Pinyin only to learn Mandarin because there are two many 同音字 （homophone） in Chinese, Pinyin is very useful to help you master more Chinese new words by yourself.
